Kaiula is said to have been born from a fresh water spring on Punalu'u Beach on the Big Island. Created when her mother dug a nest beneath a moonlit sky, this spring is said to have quenched the thirst of the children. No myth, the freshwater spring at Punalu'u Beach is known for divers who would swim to the ocean floor with containers to retrieve the pure spring water escaping from the earth. It is said to be a gift from Kaiula to the people of Hawaii. Today, the Green Sea Turtle can be found basking in the warm sun on the beaches of Punalu'u Beach Park. It is also a place of nesting. This magnificent creature can also be found on the many other islands of Hawaii as well.

Did You Know?
The Green Sea Turtle gets its name from the color of its body fat, which is green from the algae and limu it eats. Limu is the Hawaiian word for seaweed. Adult Green Turtles are herbivores (eat only plants) while the juveniles are carnivores. They feast on jellyfish and other invertebrates. Bizarre!

Hawaiian Mythology

A beautiful Hawaiian legend speaks of the goddess Kaiula, a Green Sea Turtle who watched over children playing on the shore. Kaiula could transform herself into a little girl to play among them. This way, she could look after them and keep them from harm. The people loved Kaiula as the guardian of their children.
